Seattle-based Alaska Airlines completed its acquisition of Hawaiian Airlines in September 2024, following scrutiny from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). Hawaiian will continue to operate under its iconic branding and uniforms, reflecting the local culture. Although it's still early, this strategic move could lead to smoother travel experiences both between the islands and across the Pacific.

A key concern for locals has been the impact on inter-island flights, which are vital for Hawaii's residents. The DOT shared these concerns, and Alaska Airlines has committed to maintaining all current inter-island routes, as well as essential routes to the mainland, for at least six years under legally enforceable agreements. Hawaiian Airlines plays a crucial role in Hawaii’s infrastructure, employing 7,000 people, mostly within the state. Alaska Airlines has also pledged to make Honolulu its second-largest hub, after SeaTac, ensuring its importance in the region. Hawaiian's union locals have endorsed the merger as well.

Key Highlights:

  • Alaska Airlines will maintain Hawaiian Airlines’ brand identity, ensuring the continuation of its local name, uniforms, and cultural representation.

  • The merger is expected to boost connectivity between Hawaii and the mainland U.S., offering more route options and competitive fares.

  • Frequent flyers of both airlines can look forward to improved loyalty programs, though full integration details are still forthcoming.

  • The merger aims to streamline operations, creating a more efficient and expanded service for those traveling in and out of Hawaii.
