West Hawaii is sunnier than the more lush eastern part of the island and features warmer weather with less rainfall. The west side of the island is also home to a marine mammal preserve. It provides opportunities for whale watching, viewing green sea turtles, exploring ancient fish ponds, and getting up close and personal with dolphins.

As the capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii when unification occurred under King Kamehameha I, Kailua-Kona is historically significant. Today, you can still visit his private temple Ahuena Heiau. This is a busy area on the Kona side of the big island of Hawaii and has tons of shops, bars, and restaurants. The Kona side of the island is not as lush as the Hilo side and features plenty of sunny beaches and a drier climate because it is protected from the rain carrying trade winds.
