New Era of Healthcare for Kona: Queen’s Health Systems Announces New Hospital
Healthcare in West Hawai‘i is about to undergo a transformative shift. Kona Community Hospital (KCH) has long recognized the need for a new facility to address the growing demands of the region. However, in a surprising and significant development, Queen’s Health Systems has independently announced its plan to build a state-of-the-art hospital in Kona.
The proposed 80-bed hospital, set to be located in the West Hawai‘i Business Park, comes with a bold vision. Estimated to cost between $450 million and $500 million, the facility will include advanced features such as a helipad, a cutting-edge emergency department, an ambulatory care center, and comprehensive inpatient services. Beyond medical infrastructure, Queen’s aims to support healthcare professionals by developing adjacent affordable housing—a critical step in attracting and retaining top talent to serve the community.
This announcement follows a study, funded by the Hawai‘i State Legislature and released in May, which identified two potential sites for a new KCH facility: Queen’s property in the West Hawai‘i Business Park and the former Kmart site off Queen Ka‘ahumanu Highway. While KCH was exploring its options, Queen’s decisively moved forward with its independent project, underscoring its commitment to enhancing healthcare access for the region.
Addressing a Systemic Challenge
The shortage of doctors is a well-known issue in Hawai‘i, particularly on neighboring islands like the Big Island. As my older daughter embarks on her journey through medical school and as we grow older, the fragility of the medical system feels increasingly urgent. One key factor contributing to the lack of medical professionals is Hawai‘i’s high cost of living and real estate.
As a real estate professional, I’ve observed firsthand how these challenges create barriers for attracting and retaining healthcare workers. The development of the new Queen’s Hospital, with its plans to include affordable housing for medical staff, is a promising step toward addressing these issues. It offers hope not just for improved healthcare infrastructure but also for a more sustainable solution to healthcare access in West Hawai‘i.
Collaboration in a Time of Change
Clayton McGhan, CEO of Kona Community Hospital, acknowledged the rapidly evolving healthcare landscape in West Hawai‘i. While KCH continues to prioritize improving healthcare access, McGhan emphasized the hospital's readiness to adjust its plans in response to Queen’s announcement. "Our mission to enhance healthcare services remains steadfast," McGhan stated, highlighting a shared goal among stakeholders to meet the needs of the community.
This development is more than just a new hospital—it symbolizes the growing healthcare opportunities and challenges in a region that continues to attract residents and visitors alike. With West Hawai‘i's population and demand for services steadily increasing, these efforts reflect a shared dedication to fostering a healthier, stronger community.
A Bright Future for West Hawai‘i
Queen’s Health Systems’ plans for a hospital in Kona bring hope and optimism to the Big Island. For residents, this new facility promises access to high-quality, comprehensive care without the need for extensive travel. For the region, it signals growth, investment, and a future where healthcare infrastructure keeps pace with community needs.
As plans take shape, the collaboration and adaptability of healthcare providers like KCH and Queen’s Health Systems will be pivotal. Together, these initiatives mark a significant step forward for West Hawai‘i, ensuring that its residents have access to the care they deserve.
