After I wrote a piece about the Hokulea’s 50th anniversary last month, it was announced that the legendary Polynesian voyaging canoe will return to Japan for the first time in 20 years.
The Moananuiakea project itself is remarkable: a four-year worldwide voyage across 36 countries and regions, connecting cultures through traditional wayfinding, sustainability, and human connection.
The more I learn about Hokuleʻa, the more I feel it represents something much bigger than a canoe. It reminds us of human potential, resilience, and hope. Navigating thousands of miles across the Pacific without modern instruments still feels almost unbelievable today.
There is also something deeply emotional about seeing Hawaii and Japan connected again through the ocean.
I’ve included a beautiful video and some images below that help explain the spirit of the project. It’s well worth watching.
In times when the world can feel uncertain, projects like Hokuleʻa remind us that exploration, courage, and respect for nature still matter.
Let’s continue moving toward a better future together. After all, we are all connected.
