I just spotted the first whale of the season off the Kona Coast, and it was pure magic. Watching these gentle giants glide against Hawaii’s breathtaking sunset backdrop was both humbling and awe-inspiring—a beautiful reflection of the delicate ecosystem. Each winter, humpback whales journey thousands of miles from Alaska to Hawaii, a remarkable testament to resilience and the power of connection.
In my early years on the island, I worked as a whale boat guide. Those days were filled with wonder and reality checks. Watching passengers light up at their first whale sighting was unforgettable, yet so were the threats these animals face—ship strikes, habitat loss, and more. I vividly remember the Superferry debate of 2007, where progress clashed with preservation, ultimately ending the Superferry project in concerns for marine life.
Now, there’s a new conversation: The Hawaii Seaglider Initiative. In partnership with REGENT Craft Inc., this project is exploring eco-friendly, electric seagliders as a solution for interisland travel. These innovative 12-pax vehicles skim above the water, reaching speeds of 180 mph, combining sustainability with efficiency. It should not collide with whales as it glides over the ocean, too.
Seagliders offer more than convenience—they could reshape daily life here. With ports instead of airports, travel between islands could feel as easy as catching a ferry, minus the long waits and environmental impact. Hawaiian Airlines, the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, and local communities are backing the project, focusing on connectivity for Native Hawaiian communities. Imagine easier access to education, healthcare, and cultural events, all while preserving the islands’ essence.
Challenges persist—environmental assessments, certifications, and infrastructure—but the vision remains inspiring: progress intertwined with sustainability.
The whales’ long journey always prompts reflection—on the past, the future, and the connections between here and there. Can we innovate while safeguarding the ecosystem we share? Can tradition and technology truly coexist?
Here’s to a Hawaii that cherishes its history, embraces its future, and fosters effortless connections—all while preserving the natural beauty that makes our home so extraordinary.
