Kamaʻāina Observatory Tours Are Back at the Mauna Kea Summit!

A Unique Opportunity to Connect with Science, Culture, and the Stars

If you’ve ever wondered what it’s like to stand among the world’s most advanced telescopes, perched above the clouds at nearly 14,000 feet, here’s your chance! I’ve been to the summit several times but not in the actual telescope, so I was super elated to hear about how the Kamaʻāina Observatory Experience (KOE) has officially returned.

KOE offers Hawai‘i residents exclusive access to the Mauna Kea summit and its renowned observatories. Hosted by the Mauna Kea Observatories and NOIRLab, this free, guided experience happens the first Saturday of each month (excluding December and January due to winter weather). It’s a wonderful opportunity to witness firsthand how science and culture intersect on one of Hawaiʻi’s most sacred landscapes.

What to Expect

Participants begin their journey at the 9,200-foot elevation Visitor Information Station, where transportation is provided to the summit. The experience includes:

Each tour is limited to 12–14 guests, keeping the experience intimate and respectful of the mountain’s environment.

Who Can Join?

This program is open exclusively to kamaʻāina—Hawai‘i residents with valid state ID or driver’s license (for guests 18+).
Please note:

A Personal Note

I’ve been at the summit of Mauna Kea several times, and each time, it’s unforgettable. But I haven’t visited the telescopes yet, so I’ve already reserved my spot for the program!

My youngest daughter won a coin design contest for the ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center a couple of years ago, and her coin was sold at the Onizuka Visitor Center. For many of us who live in Hawaiʻi, Mauna Kea is a mountain of wonder, reflection, science and deep cultural meaning.
